NSC Policy for Playing Up an Age Group for U11-U13:
NSC recommends that all players in the U11-U13 age groups try out with their birth year appropriate age group. Playing soccer at age level provides the best developmental environment for your child. If it is determined that additional players are needed at the next age group, the players who ranked at the top of their age group may be asked to move up (but they will not be required to move).
If a player chooses to also try out for an age group above their actual age, the following guideline applies: A player may not "play up" more than two years above his or her actual age group. A player must score in the top 50% of an older age group in order to play up. Minor exceptions may be made in order to evenly distribute players between certain age groups in order to maximize the number of teams the club is able to form at each age group).
Team Selection Process 2017-2018
Every effort will be made to ensure there is no conflict of interest during evaluations.
Evaluators and members of the Team Selection Committee will not participate in player evaluations if they have a child or coach a team in that age group.
U11: U11 is the entry level to Classic (competitive) soccer in NSC. It is open to players whose date of birth falls within the U9, U10 and U11 ranges in the listing above. (**Based on the Neenah Soccer Club policy, players who are in the 2009 birth year are eligible to "play up", although it is highly recommended that children play at least one year of U9/10 Rec soccer and/or participate in the Rocket Launchers Academy before trying out for a U11 classic team.) The U11 age group has the largest age range due to the developmental aspect at this age group. For players (and their families) who are physically and emotionally prepared, participation in U11 classic soccer represents the first step to a higher level of competition and commitment than Rec or Academy soccer. These teams will play in the U11 competitive league of the East Central Soccer District. At this age group, we will form enough teams so that all interested players can participate. Each team will compete in a division that is appropriate for its skill level.
U11 Tryouts will serve as player evaluations that will be used to expose the players and families to the tryout process. Evaluations will be used to help formulate the structure of the age group pool. Due to the large number of players that are new to classic soccer at U11, we will not make a final determination on team assignments based on this single tryout evaluation. A final determination of the U11 age group pool structure and specific team assignments will be made after 1-2 weeks of practices in August, prior to the start of the fall league season. These will be based on a combination of the tryout evaluation and coaches evaluations during the first 1-2 weeks of practice.
U11 will offer positions in an age group “pool” to allow for flexibility within the age group for sharing players between teams and movement of players between the teams throughout the year as their skills and abilities develop.
U12-U13: U12 teams will be formed following tryouts, but the U12 players will be rostered as an age group “pool” to allow for flexibility within the age group for sharing players between teams and movement of players between the teams throughout the year as their skills and abilities develop.
U13 teams are not able to be rostered in an age group pool, but when there are multiple teams at the age group they will work together to share players as necessary utilizing club passing between the teams.
Once the tryout has been completed, player scores will be computed and all players ranked by the Team Selection Committee.
The player score is based on the coaches’ evaluation (50%) and the tryout evaluators scores (50%). The tryout evaluators and the coaches are not to be a part of the Team Selection Committee.
The coaches will meet with the Team Selection Committee to determine the team rosters. The coaches will be given a listing of the top players evaluated for their team. The coach may request limited roster adjustments subject to approval of the Team Selection Committee. These adjustments are limited and must be justified and approved unanimously by the Team Selection Committee.
The Team Selection Committee consists of the Club President, Vice President, Classic Director, Director of Coaching and Club Administrator. If any committee member has a personal interest with a player in a specific age group, they recuse themselves. A replacement will be determined by the Board of Directors as a suitable replacement.
The committee will be on hand to discuss any questions, issues, or requests for exceptions.
Team Selection Committee:
President – Marti Coan
Vice President – Carlton Sealock
Classic Director – Tip Brown
Director of Coaching - Cesar Rizzo
Coaching Advisor – Lars Nordang
Administrator – Carmen Dietz

Pinnies will be assigned to each player.
NSC Policy for Playing Up an Age Group for 14+:
A player may "play up" based on their skill. There is not a limit on how many years a player can play up, but the general guideline is that a player must be in the top 50% of the age group they are trying to “play up”. (Minor exceptions may be made in order to evenly distribute players between certain age groups in order to maximize the number of teams the club is able to form at each age group)
Team Selection Process:
The coaches will determine the composition of their teams, with guidance from the Classic Director as well as an impartial club representative who will have observed the tryout. All efforts will be made to field teams at as many age groups as possible. This may require that some players “play up” an age group. The most qualified and skilled players will be selected to “play up”.
Team Formation and Player Notification (All age groups)
Offers will be made on the following dates:
U11-U13: Friday, June 16th, 6PM
U14+: Friday, June 23rd, 6 PM
Team selection will be posted on the Neenah Soccer Club website with a link to accept or decline the offer.
The player has up to 24 hours to accept or decline the offer in writing by email -- a verbal commitment on the phone is not sufficient. Alternate offers will also be posted on the website. Definition of alternate offers will be explained and defined for each team or age group.
NOTE: Please remind your player to remember their pinny number from their tryout, as their offer will be based on the pinny number. If trying out at more than one age group, a player will have more than one pinny number (one for each age group they try out for), please keep track of this.
Player Cost (after offer acceptance)
Upon offer acceptance, a player registration fee will be due. The fee covers NSC membership, participation in Neenah’s Flatgrass tournament (exception of U16 and older girls teams) and referee costs associated with East Central and/or Wisconsin State League games. Additional costs (training and tournament fees) are incurred on a per team basis. Please refer to each team’s prospectus for additional information.
Scholarships are available. Learn more about NSC’s need-based scholarship program by clicking on this link: About Classic Soccer or going to the NSC web site http://www.neenahsoccerclub.org . Navigate to About Classic Soccer or select "Classic Scholarship" under "NSC Forms" at the top of the NSC home page.
Each player will need to submit a completed 2017-2018 Event Medical Waiver Form (not yet available).
As you have likely heard, US Soccer has announced new player development initiatives focusing on player age grouping based on calendar year, as well as the number of players on the field and rostered on a team.
Following the direction of WYSA, the East Central District (which Neenah Soccer Club is a part of) will put these changes into effect for the 2016/2017 season, which begins on 8/1/2016. Neenah Soccer club has already begun communicating with the existing Classic coaches and planning for the age group changes. The goal of NSC will remain fielding as many classic teams as possible at each age group and having them participate at the appropriate competition level for the development of the players and the teams.
What does this mean for your child?
Changing the age groups based on birth year may result in a shuffling of teams. This will allow players to play with a different group of players, which may include players from the next grade up, or a grade younger, depending on when their birthday falls. (Under the old age grouping, they were roughly teamed with other players in the same grade as them.)
Can my son/daughter continue to play with the classic team that they have played on for several years? Maybe, as long as they will be playing at or above their age group. We will continue to allow a player to “play up” with an age group higher than where their birth date places them. Depending on how the numbers work out for each age group, we may need several players to “play up” at a given age group in order to field a team for that age group.
How can my child be considered for the next age group up? As has been the case in the past, any player can try out for an age group 1 or 2 years above theirs. (I.e. a 2005 birth year can try out for the 2004 or 2003 age group). This applies for U11-U14 players; U15+ players do not have this limitation. When registering for tryouts, register your child for the primary age group that they would like to play at. Because of the age group changes, we will be allowing all players to tryout at a second age group at no additional cost. When you register for tryouts, there will be a question asking if the player will be trying out at any other age group, please indicate which age group here (note that they CANNOT try out for an age group younger than their birth year, only older). Your child will then need to attend the tryout for both of the age groups.
If trying to “play up”, does my child still need to finish in the top ½ of the age group they are trying to play up in? Due to the age group changes we anticipate the need for some additional flexibility in forming our teams. Depending on the number of players trying out for a particular age group, there is a good chance that a player may be offered a position on one of these teams, having not placed in the top 50% of that age group. NSC is committed to providing as many players as possible an opportunity to play on a team, and aims to offer as many teams at each age group as possible.
Pool play for U11 & U12: For both coed and girls teams at the U11 and U12 age groups, NSC will offer all players a position in the age group “pool”. At these age groups we will form enough teams so that all interested players can participate. Each team will compete in a division that is appropriate for its skill level. U11 and U12 players will be registered as an age group “pool” to allow for flexibility within the age group, for sharing players between teams and movement of players between the teams as their skills and abilities develop. Tryouts will be used to begin grouping players based on their ability level. Further evaluation will take place when the age group starts practicing in August, prior to the start of league seasons in September. Evaluation and movement of players between specific teams can continue throughout the year.
Tryout dates (U11-13) and details will be published to the NSC website by Friday, May 13th, 2016.
US Soccer has announced new player development initiatives focusing on player age grouping based on calendar year, as well as number of players on the field and rostered on a team.
The initiative is a required change with the 2017/2018 season, but the Wisconsin Youth Soccer Association (WYSA) has determined the best option for the clubs in our state is to implement the changes for this upcoming year instead of phasing them in slowly over two years.
Following the direction of WYSA, the East Central District will have these changes go into effect for the 2016/2017 season, which begins on 8/1/2016.
